The Culinary Scholarships Edinburgh Beltane Beacon for Public Engagement is seeking an experienced administrator with a friendly and efficient approach to support a project which will effect a major change in higher education.

Beacons for Public Engagement is an exciting new initiative from research funders who have provided £8m over four years to establish six Beacon projects across the UK. The Culinary Scholarships aim is to transform how the researchers engage with the public and embed a culture of public engagement in our higher education and research institutions.

We Culinary Scholarships seek a committed and professional administrator to provide full administrative support to the Edinburgh Beltane project. You will join a close knit team and support the partners to ensure that open lines of communication are maintained and information is efficiently disseminated. You will be prepared to organise and support events during unsocial hours, and travel to our partner organisations to support meetings. As the first point of contact for the whole project, you will draw on your excellent communication, interpersonal and IT skills. Post is funded until 30 June 2012.

Scholarship Description: The AAR Dementia Research Grants are seeding grants for new researchers, valued up to $30,000 (exclusive of GST), to be allocated for research in a dementia-relevant area. In 2011, five grants will be offered. Grants are awarded in both biological/non-clinical and clinical/psychosocial research areas. This year, one grant will be awarded to reflect the Consumer Dementia Research Network priority areas. Alzheimer’s Australia Research Limited (AAR) is a non-profit company formed to promote, disseminate and fund research into all aspects of dementia. Every year, there is an application process for grants and scholarships. The 2011 Dementia Grants Program consists of four main categories – research, travel, postgraduate scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships. Applicants are entitled to apply only once in each of the categories. Successful applicants must acknowledge the support of Alzheimer’s Australia Research (AAR) in all publications, presentations, summary findings and media announcements relating to the research, provide progress reports on the research and be prepared to assist AAR, if required, by speaking at an Alzheimer’s Australia function, attending specified conferences, hosting laboratory visits, or being featured in media articles/releases for AAR.

Eligibility:

The principal investigator must be a new investigator (defined solely as never being a principal investigator on a successful research grant worth more than $30,000). Salary-related funding (e.g. scholarships/fellowships) will not be counted towards the $30,000 threshold unless it is a fellowship from AAR.

In general, the principal investigator should have completed a doctorate or other research qualification (Honours degree or higher) within the past five years, however significant career interruptions will be taken into account.

The principal investigator must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. Principal investigators who have been resident in Australia for at least two years and have evidence of eligibility and application for permanent residency may also be eligible for the AAR Dementia Research Grant.

The research must be conducted in Australia.

The French government through the French Embassy in Jakarta has provided scholarships to citizens of Indonesia for more than 30 years. In order to develop human resources in Indonesia, the French Embassy will provide scholarships for 2010.

The scholarships are given to civil servants, lecturers, students (especially those involved in the cooperation program between France and Indonesia) to follow the 2 types of educational programs:


Masters (full scholarship)
Doctorate (full scholarship - 18 months)

The jury will give priority to those who had to identify either a masters or doctorate program and who has had a positive response / recommendations from a professor of French or letter of acceptance.

Job description: The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a unique 2-year post-graduate training program of service and on-the-job learning for health professionals interested in the practice of applied epidemiology.

Since 1951, over 3,000 EIS officers have responded to requests for epidemiologic assistance within the United States and throughout the world. EIS officers are on the public health frontlines, conducting epidemiologic investigations, research, and public health surveillance both nationally and internationally.

Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program for Masters in Infrastructure Management, Yokohama National University

Since 1995 Yokohama National University has been providing prominent mid-career engineering professionals with chances to study infrastructure management under its inter-faculty Master’s Degree Program in Infrastructure Management (IMP) funded by the Japanese Government and administered by the World Bank Institute. Fifty-three scholars have already graduated and have been actively working in their countries with their full knowledge and experience gained in Japan.

Infrastructure plays an important role in economic growth, improving social welfare and equitable distribution of income among people and regions. Appropriate infrastructure management is crucial to fully utilize expensive infrastructure for the above objectives. Yokohama is one of the most suitable places to study such subject because the development of the city itself shows the evidence of the importance of infrastructure development and its appropriate management.

IMP is an interdisciplinary program jointly organized by graduate schools of law, economics, business administration, engineering and environment. Stress is placed on management rather than engineering. The program offers lectures in the fields of engineering, environment, economics, management and law, together with practical Japanese, mathematics, computer techniques and other basic subjects in the first year. During the second year, students engage in internship programs related to their areas of studies. Finally students submit thesis, which is a requirement for the completion of the Master’s program. Presently students are from Africa, Asia and Europe. Mid-career engineering professionals who have active role in their country’s development in the World Bank developing member countries are eligible to apply for IMP.
