Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS): Apothecary Bees, Using the Honey Bee as a Tool for Drug Discovery


PhD Culinary Scholarships funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and provided by the Wales European Funding Office (WEFO) in the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG). This project aims to find new antimicrobial agents to register the help of bees. Honey antibacterial effects have been observed for more than a century and has been widely used as an additional therapy for wound dressings. Activity of honey is due to various factors including the nature of hyper-osmotic sugar, hydrogen peroxide production by natural enzymatic reactions, metabolic byproducts, such as Methylglyoxal (MGO), peptides derived bees and chemical-plant donated by the plant. http://www.callforpapersinfo.com

The consortium will study the response of ice volume / sea level with countries of different climate during the last five inter-glacials, which covers the period with higher sea level than now.Culinary Scholarships As a researcher in the consortium iGlass, you will combine the observations of past sea levels and the estimated variation of Earth's ice sheets with solid modeling to develop an integrated understanding of the total sea level change during the period and the relative contribution of the Greenland and (West) Antarctic ice sheet . The Culinary Scholarships Edinburgh Beltane Beacon for Public Engagement is seeking an experienced administrator with a friendly and efficient approach to support a project which will effect a major change in higher education.

Beacons for Public Engagement is an exciting new initiative from research funders who have provided £8m over four years to establish six Beacon projects across the UK. Scholarship Description: The AAR Dementia Research Grants are seeding grants for new researchers, valued up to $30,000 (exclusive of GST), to be allocated for research in a dementia-relevant area. In 2011, five grants will be offered. Grants are awarded in both biological/non-clinical and clinical/psychosocial research areas. This year, one grant will be awarded to reflect the Consumer Dementia Research Network priority areas. Alzheimer’s Australia Research Limited (AAR) is a non-profit company formed to promote, disseminate and fund research into all aspects of dementia. Every year, there is an application process for grants and scholarships. The 2011 Dementia Grants Program consists of four main categories – research, travel, postgraduate scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships. Applicants are entitled to apply only once in each of the categories. Successful applicants must acknowledge the support of Alzheimer’s Australia Research (AAR) in all publications, presentations, summary findings and media announcements relating to the research, provide progress reports on the research and be prepared to assist AAR, if required, by speaking at an Alzheimer’s Australia function, attending specified conferences, hosting laboratory visits, or being featured in media articles/releases for AAR.

Eligibility:

  • The principal investigator must be a new investigator (defined solely as never being a principal investigator on a successful research grant worth more than $30,000). Salary-related funding (e.g. scholarships/fellowships) will not be counted towards the $30,000 threshold unless it is a fellowship from AAR.
  • In general, the principal investigator should have completed a doctorate or other research qualification (Honours degree or higher) within the past five years, however significant career interruptions will be taken into account.
  • The principal investigator must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. Principal investigators who have been resident in Australia for at least two years and have evidence of eligibility and application for permanent residency may also be eligible for the AAR Dementia Research Grant.
  • The research must be conducted in Australia.
